There Are Many Benefits Of Brick Cleaning
Brick Wall Cleaning Methods
There are two reasons to clean exposed brick walls: either you will be cleaning a new brick building or you have decided to clean old bricks that have become dirty or moldy. The method for cleaning bricks will not vary depending on whether the bricks are old or new, however, there are several different ways to clean the bricks, depending on the amount and type of dirt to be removed.
Choose How To Clean The Bricks
Determine the desired approach to cleaning the bricks. There are several ways to clean exposed brick walls: Powder detergents are compounds that can safely clean bricks, but on the other hand, specific cleaning solutions for bricks have a mixture of acids and detergents that will also work satisfactorily. Using a high-pressure washer is an approach that will generally result in clean bricks without the use of chemicals. As a last resort, muriatic acid can be used, but with caution.
Powder Detergents
Mix powdered product with water for a mild detergent that will clean most brick walls. Using a 20 liter bucket, mix one part of powder detergent for every 15 liters of water. With a brush, soak the brick with the mixture and scrub vigorously. Leave the detergent on for 20 minutes. Brush any more critical areas with a wire brush, washing the area again with the brush. Rinse, removing the product with a garden hose.
Brick Cleaning Solution
Mix the brick cleaner with water for a stronger application. Brick cleaners are created especially for cleaning this type of wall. They are a little more abrasive, however, depending on the severity of the area to be cleaned, they can provide a better finish. Brick cleaners come in packs of four liters or, for more extensive jobs, 20 liters. Follow the same procedure as described for powdered detergents, but do not leave the product on the surface for more than 15 minutes.
High-Pressure Washing Bricks
Clean the brick wall with a high-pressure washer, which will clean effectively and safely. This equipment can reach a pressure of up to 3500 PSI or more, and you can rent it from specialised locations. The attendant may also instruct you on the use of the high-pressure washer. Or best, call for a professional pressure washing cleaning service.
Muriatic Acid
Muriatic acid should only be used as a last resort when the dirt on the brick is very tough, as it will remove just about anything, including the finished face of the brick; therefore, never leave the acid mixture on the wall surface for more than five minutes. Fill a 20-liter bucket ¾ full and add the acid. Follow package directions for proper mixing. Use a brush to scrub the brick vigorously, let the mixture sit for no more than five minutes, brush with a wire brush and rinse with a garden hose.
Safety Protection
Always wear safety protection, eyewear, a mask, rubber gloves, long-sleeved shirts, and long pants. Chemicals can burn the skin, eyes, and lungs and should be avoided whenever possible. Also, brick fragments can fall into your eyes if you are using high-pressure washing. Always remember to be safe when doing any of the above procedures.
